In St. Augustine, Florida, for example, our oldest city, two lions guard the entrance to the bridge over the Intercoastal Canal.<br /><br />I think you're right that they signify power. To put Zagreb in perspectiv...@Abraham - I doubt it. To put Zagreb in perspective - I have 1.5hrs drive to Italy, 1.5hrs drive to Austria (3.5hrs drive to Vienna), 4.5hrs drive to Germany... I don't remember reading in any history books that lions were roaming around Europe (maybe in some pre-human era?).
