Random lion statues/reliefs in Zagreb... because we have so many lions running around the city... :-D

  1. Did your area actually have lions at one time in the distant past? I thought maybe that is what there is so much lion sculpture. They make handsome photographs.

  2. @Abraham - I doubt it. To put Zagreb in perspective - I have 1.5hrs drive to Italy, 1.5hrs drive to Austria (3.5hrs drive to Vienna), 4.5hrs drive to Germany... I don't remember reading in any history books that lions were roaming around Europe (maybe in some pre-human era?). I guess they signify power, so many people throughout Zagreb's 1000yrs history thought it was a good idea to place them around Zagreb.

  3. Zagreb has "lionized" lions. We have lion statues here, too. In St. Augustine, Florida, for example, our oldest city, two lions guard the entrance to the bridge over the Intercoastal Canal.

I think you're right that they signify power. And they are majestically ferocious!

    Nice shots!

  4. there is a house I drive by every day that has two lion statues on its front porch - they look very funny compared to the size of the house, and they're not nice and old like the ones in your photos.

  6. Apparently you can find lion statues everywhere where there are no real lions (other than in ZOOs)! :-D
