On the central square, our civil governor Josip Jelacic (1801-1859) is watching over us. He abolished slavery, and held the first elections for Croatian parliament:

U-bahn, Vienna's underground (also above the ground) is the most effective way to go around Vienna. Also very cheap. Our 72h ticket was only 15EUR and it was good for U-bahn, trams, buses...

The first photo is interesting. The second photo is stunning! Beautifully done!
ReplyDeleteI love the man on the horse statue! Bravo!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDelete@Jacob - my friend is by now used to me carrying a large bag with lenses and my camera, and taking hundreds of photos, but she noticed something - I never take any public transport photos while on a trip...
That statue serves as another place to meet, for people in Zagreb, just as the clock in one of the previous posts (the two are maybe 50m away from each other). To be precise, when using this statue as a meeting point, everyone says "let's meet under the tail"... :)
I got distracted by the fantastic buildings and lamp posts in your first photo. And the second photo is dizzying but fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI never realized slavery was in your history.
ReplyDeleteFantastic shot and well deserved statue!
ReplyDeleteYour photos taken abroad are so beautiful that I think you should create a travel blog! I would be your first follower! :-)))
@ JM - I already have an all purpose blog... mostly in Croatian, but there are some English posts as well. Lots and lots of photos there (most interesting ones are on the right side as links), so you're welcome to check it out: http://astrobejb.bloger.hr
ReplyDelete@ B SQUARED - well, it's probably not the slavery you have in mind. We didn't "import" slaves or occupy anyone, but we had feudalism for a long time. Our people in villages were almost slaves. Technically, they were free to go (where?), but they had to pay "taxes" to the top guy (feud). The taxes were so high, it left them with nothing. Also, they had no say in anything, and the hierarchy was such you had no way of moving up the ladder. This type of system here was thought of as slavery and repression and was abolished by Jelacic....
@ Hilda - I love the facade on that building behind Jelacic statue too! It has just been renovated, I think they finished it last or maybe even this year. :)
